About the Role
Step into a key role supporting the accurate and compliant delivery of SMSF accounting services within a growing, forward thinking professional services firm. We are seeking a skilled SMSF Senior Accountant to support our growing Superannuation team.
In this role, you will be responsible for preparing SMSF financial statements, annual returns, regulatory compliance requirements and member related transactions. You will work closely with clients, advisers and auditors, ensuring accuracy, adherence to legislation and timely completion of all SMSF deliverables. As part of a collaborative team, you’ll contribute to the smooth and compliant administration of SMSFs across a diverse client base.
What you’ll do:
SMSF Compliance & Accounting
- Prepare annual financial statements for SMSFs in line with accounting standards and superannuation legislation
- Prepare and lodge SMSF annual returns
- Process member transactions including contributions, rollovers, pensions and benefit payments
- Prepare pension calculations, minimum pension requirements and arrange actuarial certificates when required
- Reconcile investment portfolios including shares, managed funds, property and other assets
- Prepare BAS and IAS where applicable
- Liaise with SMSF auditors and respond to audit queries
Regulatory & Technical
- Ensure compliance with the SIS Act and Regulations, ATO requirements and relevant superannuation legislation
- Monitor contribution caps, transfer balance caps and pension limits
- Identify and escalate compliance issues as needed
- Stay up to date with regulatory changes affecting SMSFs
Client Service
- Liaise directly with clients, financial advisers and other professionals
- Provide timely, professional responses to client queries
- Assist with the establishment and wind up of SMSFs
- Provide general guidance on superannuation matters (within licensing scope)
Systems & Process
- Maintain accurate and up to date records within SMSF administration software (e.g. BGL, Class, SuperMate)
- Manage workflow deadlines to ensure on time delivery
- Identify opportunities to improve internal processes and efficiencies
What you will bring
Essential
- Minimum 3+ years’ experience in SMSF accounting and compliance
- Strong understanding of superannuation legislation and taxation law
- Experience with SMSF software (BGL, Class, SuperMate or similar)
- Excellent attention to detail and strong organisational skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple funds and meet deadlines
Desireable
- CA/CPA qualified or currently studying
- Experience with pension strategies and complex SMSF structures
- Knowledge of Division 7A, CGT and small business concessions as they relate to SMSFs
